Rolling Stock

The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway was always known for its distinctive locomotives and carriages, all built to high standards.

Most of the original rolling stock was broken up when the line closed in 1935 and for the first nine years of our operation of the revived railway we used smaller and lighter locomotives and carriages. However, this was only a temporary measure until we were able to rebuild enough heritage rolling stock to accommodate sufficient passengers. Currently we have three rebuilt vehicles with a fourth due in 2014.

Our Loading Gauge

The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway is described as a nominal 2ft gauge railway, but our gauge is actually just under this at 600mm - the same as the Ffestiniog and the Vale of Rheidol.

Our rolling stock has a back to back set between 21" - 21.5". Our tightest clearance on the line is 44" from track centre.
