The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway welcomes young volunteers from 14 to 25 with an interest in railways, or those who just want to get out and do something a bit different!
Younger volunteers are also considered provided they are accompanied at all times by a parent or guardian.
Depending on what you are interested in, there are a wide range of activities around the railway.
There are also often many opportunities to get involved in one-off jobs and activities connected with events.
As long as you demonstrate that you take a sensible approach to working on the railway and that you abide by the railway's Code of Safe Practice, then not very much.
Whilst you can start learning and understanding the workings of locomotives and get involved with working on them, volunteers need to be 16 to be passed as a fireman. After becoming a passed fireman, you can start to learn the skill of driving, but again will need to be 21 to be passed as a driver.
Firstly you will need to come to a short induction session, so you can get clued-up on all the bits you need to know before doing any work on the railway. As part of this we will need a completed Volunteer Registration Form and, for volunteers under 16, parents will need to sign and return to us a Parental Consent Form.
For information on what to bring and other volunteering details, refer to our Hints & Tips.
The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway has in place a full Child Protection Policy. A copy of our policy statement can be found on staff noticeboards or can be viewed here.
The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway also is a member of Devon's Voluntary Youth Service.
