EAST Group

The L&BR East Group had a busy year last year.

There are 16 active volunteers at Fridaywood Farm, and one full time paid Carpenter. Our current projects are reconstruction of Carriage No.5 and the refurbishment of Van No.23.

Carriage No.5 is nearing completion and the underframe is now in place and awaits the fitting of the roof, doors and windows.

Van 23 is being assessed as to what can be recovered and re-used. We are designing a new steel underframe to enable it to run on L&BR metals sometime next year.

Dave Ely has sent us these photos taken at the EAST Group Christmas Dinner at The Blue Strawberry, Hatfield Peveral in Essex last Saturday 15th December.

The L&BR East Group (the carriage builders) invite local members to their 2018 Christmas Lunch.

This year this will be on 15th December at 13:00 at The Blue Strawberry, The Street, Hatfield Peverel, Essex. CM3 2DW.

Latest set of photos from Tony Ely

These pictures show the assembly of the individual sections of Carriage No.5 onto the solebars. We now have a carriage in the making.

Tony Ely has sent us an update from Fridaywood Farm.

It has been a slow process as this carriage is another new type and as usual nothing to go on so it's learn as you go. All the units are together but we are still working on them before they are fitted to the sole bars ready for the underframe. We are about 60% finished - but there is still a lot of work to do.

August 29th 2018: The latest report from Colchester

As you can see we are trying a "modular" construction method this time so that each section will already have its seats internal and external panelling installed prior to fitting onto the underframe.

The underframe is under construction at the FR due for delivery in June.

1. Bits from the roof of the new workshop were found to be damaging various items of paintwork. This has been fixed by cladding the ceiling in plastic sheet.
